Online shopping is generally the biggest problem that many face when they are constantly spending a huge amount purchasing products that please them. A group of researchers from Hannover Medical School has recently found online shopping to be a mental disorder in reality. The researchers are looking for means that can help them spot the exact symptoms and characteristics of the condition plus also understand their effect on the mind. The disorder has been termed as Buying-shopping disorder (BSD) and it is found to affect 1 in 200 people owing to the Internet craze. The people who end up spending a lot online could also end up owing money or fighting with their loved ones. The online shopping addicts tend to lose complete control over self.
According to Dr. Astrid Müller, it is high time that people start considering BSD as a mental health issue and start researching & investigating about it on the Internet. The condition has remained unrecognized for a long time now. The addicts have found to be facing a lot of depression and anxiety. The increasing online stores, apps, and home delivery have caused the number of shopaholics to rise. The easy availability, affordability, and variety on the Internet have made people lazy and more squandering. The 24×7 availability and at-home service has made things worse for the people. The disorder has not yet been termed as a disease but it is considered to be other specified impulse control disorder. The disorder can cause self-control breakdown, physical clutter, psychiatric problems, extreme distress, relationship difficulties, and debt.
Similarly, retail fraud prevention platform Riskified has reported that mobile apps pose a lesser risk in terms of online shopping frauds. The mobile apps experience 70% fewer fraud attempts in comparison to the desktop-made orders. The credit-cautious customers could opt for other options like installment or pay on delivery on the mobile apps and prevent fraud attempts.
