CEO of T-Mobile has told the federal court that they wanted a merger to happen with Dish in the year 2015 however it could not happen as Dish had concerns regarding the possible disintegration of T-Mobile. A merger at that time would have given the access to many spectrums to T-Mobile which Dish had held on to for long but had never put to use. They would also be getting into the satellite TV business.
John Legere, the CEO had been in court where he was testifying as part of the lawsuit which has been brought by a many attorney generals of states as they attempt to block the merger that is going to happen between T-Mobile and Sprint. The response of Legere was made to a question by the lawyer about why T-Mobile had to merge with a direct rival like Sprint and not Dish which is not offering cellular services yet. Legere had reportedly said that he was the one to recommend the idea to the board of T-Mobile in the year 2015 only to see them coming to an end by Dish.
The deal would have had a lot of benefits for T-Mobile as Dish has a lot of spectrum which could have become useful for T-Mobile. Legere has reportedly said. T-Mobile would be ending up with payment of $8 billion to acquire a spectrum which was similar and it would put them on par with Verizon and AT&T. The TV business of Dish would have further allowed Dish to diversify and have more subscribers in the way that both AT&T and Verizon do by offering TV services and locking the subscribers in.
