China Cracks Down On Illegal Meat Affecting Indian Exports Of Buffalo Meat

Posted on December 18, 2019December 17, 2019 by Cynthia Berlin

The crackdown of China on illegal meat import has left India, which is among buffalo meat’s biggest exporter, looking desperately for new buyers.

There have been stricter border controls that have been adopted by China because of the American Swine fever which has been affecting China. This has meant that the export of Indian buffalo meat to China which has flown over the years through Vietnam has effectively stopped. The exporters in India have now placed their hopes on Indonesia and them tripling their import of meat by more than three times from the nation in Southeast Asia to make up for the losses that they have gone through in the year.

China’s border controls have caused damage to the meat trade that happens in the black market, which usually would be close to $2 billion in one year. India can’t sell the meat directly to China as there is a ban been imposed by Beijing from 2001 onwards due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

China is also the biggest pork consumer and has boasted the import of beef and other meat with the consumers seeking the alternatives to swine fever, which has led to the killing of many millions of pigs.

The shipments from India of offal and buffalo meat to China through the roots of Myanmar, Hong Kong and Thailand has also seen a slump of 23% from the previous year to as many as 14,645 containers in the year till October as per the data which has been compiled by Indian agencies. The figures of government have shown that Vietnam, which is the biggest buyer from India, has dropped its purchases by 34%.
