Samoa, one of the most hit countries due to the latest global measles outbreak, has arrested an anti-vaccination campaigner. Edwin Tamasese was charged with causing an incitement against the government order and arrested on Thursday.
The measles outbreak had taken the lives of at least 63 people most of who are children since October in the tiny island nation of Oceania. There are reports that people have been involved in spreading false information around the country against the government that the vaccinations are dangerous.
Samoa has declared an emergency in the country and the government has ordered the vaccination of all people. Most of the schools and the government institutions have remained closed in the last few days due to a government order that all people have to get vaccinated against the deadly disease.
Those found guilty of spreading false information have taken on social media to express fake news and convincing people that the vaccine is not safe for people. The disease whose symptoms include coughing, rashes, and fever has seen a recent resurgence even in the developed countries.
According to the detainee Mr Tamasese, who took to Facebook to promote false information, claimed that instead of using the vaccine people should use papaya leaf extract to treat the illness. But according to experts, this is an outdated form and a very basic form of treatment. The illness has resurfaced in recent times and the bacterium has grown a lot more resistant in recent times to the average vaccine. The vaccine that is currently being used has been developed by the researchers to kill and suppress the mutant bacteria.
Samoa’s low vaccination rate is also seen as a cause of so many deaths in the country. The deaths of two children in 2018 caused widespread protests in the country. After investigation, it was found that the nurse had mixed a muscle relaxant instead of water with the medicine in the vaccination.
