The University of Birmingham scientists in association with the University of Amsterdam have discovered a possible clarification for the mental slowness that often comes with illness.
An expected 12 Million citizens in the UK have a chronic medical disease, and many of them report grave mental fatigue that they distinguish as “brain fog” or “sluggishness.” This case is frequently as debilitating as the illness itself.
A group in the Centre for Human Brain Health probed the connection between inflammation and this mental fog. In a research posted in Neuroimage, they displayed that inflammation seems to have a specific negative impact on the readiness of brain to maintain and reach an alert state.
Professor Jane Raymond and Dr Ali Mazaheri of the University’s Centre for Human Brain Health, are the lead authors of the research. Dr Mazaheri claims: “Researchers have long believed in a connection between cognition and inflammation, but it is hard to be clear about the effect and cause. For instance, people suffering from a medical disease or being very obese may complain of cognitive impairment, but it is difficult to tell if that is due to the inflammation related to these illness or if there are other factors.”
On a related note, a protein that lung, breast, and other cancers employ to promote their distribution—or metastasis—to the brain, has been detected by a group spearheaded by New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine investigators. CEMIP, the protein, will now be a target of efforts to prevent, predict, and treat brain metastases, which are recurrent factors for cancer deaths.
In their research, posted in Nature Cell Biology, the researchers discovered that CEMIP prompts resident immune cells and blood vessel in the brain to make inflammatory molecules, which in return support the progression and survival of cancer cells to make brain tumors.
