Hong Kong’s Human Rights and Democracy Bill Passed by U.S. Senate

Posted on November 28, 2019 by Cynthia Berlin

It’s been six months of chaos in Hong Kong and now the U.S. Senate has passed a unanimous right and democracy bill to support Hong Kong protestors.

Defying China’s supremacy in Hong Kong, the U.S. has brought a rights and democracy bill to bring some semblance of law in Hong Kong. Protestors in Hong Kong will be able to breathe with relief with aid from an unexpected source.

Though the U.S.-China relationship is strained due to the ongoing trade war, the U.S. has voted to help Hong Kong in its political unrest against China.

The bill known as the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act was passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate which will help in restoring the democratic rights of the people of Hong Kong.

Once the bill is passed as law, it will give the authority to the President to bring in sanctions and to impose travel restrictions, if there are any signs of torture, detention or forced confession of any person in Hong Kong.

In 1997, Hong Kong was handed over to China by Britain. But China is said to have infringed on the agreement made, by encroaching into the city’s protected freedom.

The happenings in Hong Kong have brought a lot of protest and anger against China by the people watching the news.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China claims that the U.S. is interfering in the internal affairs of Hong Kong and China. It claims that the U.S. is applying double standards by the bill.

Further, China says that the protests in Hong Kong is not about democracy, but is the act of violent criminals.

The democracy bill was passed by bipartisan support and is waiting for the U.S. President to review it.

Mike Pompeo the Secretary of State states that there should be a peaceful outcome to the crisis hitting Hong Kong.
